How to get there
Getting to Harbor Island is the start of your adventure! The standard route is to fly into Portland (PWM) and enjoy the drive up the coastal Route 1, then pass through the heart of Acadia National Park to arrive at Bass Harbor. Alternatively, you can fly into Bangor (BGR) and commute to Bass Harbor.From Bass Harbor, you’ll hop on the ferry over to Swan’s Island(we’ll keep the official ferry schedule updated here on the site!). Once you disembark on Swan’s, we help you across the island to Burnt Coat Harbor, where a quick tender boat ride will bring you right onto Harbor Island.
Lodging
Think of this weekend as an elevated, coastal island campout. Some might call it rustication.Harbor Island is wonderfully simple, incredibly beautiful, and totally off grid. Here's a guide on what you can expect during your stay.Lodging is a blend of rustic 1800s historic structures (the Farmhouse, the Cottage, and the Cabin) and tent camping. Because house space is limited, we’re currently putting together the final sleep layout and will let you know your setup soon. Beds are available in the houses, though bringing a sleeping bag and your personal favorite gear is a great idea for maximum comfort.The Farmhouse, the Cottage, and the Cabin each have dedicated rooms for sleeping, and kitchens equipped with stoves and fireplaces in case of chilly nights for everyone to share.Clean drinking water is supplied by several island wells and facilities consist of traditional privies.A few suggestions:
Make sure to pack your personal toiletries, towels, flashlights/headlamps, and warm layers. When you’re not relaxing, there are unlimited woods walks, beaches, and rich Maine history to explore.Also, no wifi :)
Ideas for extedned stays
We know Downeast Maine isn't the easiest place to get to, but that's part of what makes it so special! For those with a little extra time, we highly recommend building in a few extra days on either side of the weekend to explore the coast.As you make your way to or from Bass Harbor, you'll pass right through Acadia National Park. It’s the perfect excuse to stick around a little longer for a sunrise hike on Cadillac Mountain, walk around Jordan Pond House, or exploring Bar Harbor.If you're driving up from Portland along Route 1, stopping to hike up Camden Hills' Mount Battie for panoramic harbor views or visiting downtown Rockland are incredible places to break up the drive. If you'd like to keep things local to the ferry landing, head over to Deer Isle and Stonington to see Maine's famous working waterfronts.
